The Choir: The Senior Choir at the Cathedral Church of All Saints is a mixed voice, adult choir of approximately twenty members. Choristers include a mix of singers, from university age to seniors, with a core of paid Choral Scholars. Each year, the choir sings the Cathedral’s major Sunday morning Choral Eucharist at 10:30 a.m., beginning after Labour Day and continuing to the end of June. This involves singing ten or more items on most Sundays, including an Introit, the mass movements (Kyrie, etc), the hymns, the psalm (in a range of settings), Communion and Benediction. The Senior Choir also sings a full, traditional Choral Evensong, at 7:00 p.m. on the last Sunday evening of each month between September and May. In addition to these regular commitments, the choir annually sings eight to ten other major cathedral services through the year, including principal feast days, special diocesan services such as ordination, and so on.
Practices: Choir practices take place in the Cathedral, on Thursday evenings, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., from September to mid June. In addition, there is always a final, 45 minute-long, warm-up/practice that takes place prior to every service.
Repertoire: Choir repertoire ranges from early music through to very contemporary works by living composers, in a wide range of styles. The rich acoustic in the Cathedral, both in the chancel and at the West door, enriches the choral sound, and is a major part of the blend of the Cathedral choir.
Joining the Choir: New choristers are always welcome in the CCAS Senior Choir. Interested singers should contact John Hudson at 422-5620 or through e-mail at: email@example.com Sight-reading is useful, but not a prerequisite. You will quickly learn how to sight-read in this choir! What is essential is that you have a reasonably developed sense of humour! If this poses a problem, not to fear…like the ability to sight-read, this important skill will also be developed! Come and join us!
The Choir: The Junior Choir at the Cathedral Church of All Saints is an equal-voice, children’s choir of approximately ten members. The choir includes singers from 7 to 12 years old. Junior Choir is under the very musical tutelage of John Hudson, CCAS’ Organist and Choirmaster. Junior Choir sings in church about once every 5 or six weeks through the season.
Practices: Choir practices take place in the Cathedral, on Saturday mornings at 10:00 a.m., from September to May/June. In addition, there is always a final, 45 minute-long, warm-up/practice that takes place prior to every service in which the Junior Choir sings.
Repertoire: Junior Choir repertoire is wide-ranging in style, from traditional hymns through to contemporary works by living composers, composed in a wide range of styles.
Joining Junior Choir: New choristers are always welcome in the CCAS Junior Choir. Interested parents should contact John Hudson at 422-5620 or via e-mail at: firstname.lastname@example.org . How old should children be to join Junior Choir? Children should be old enough to read the words of hymns (although there are some hard words, even for adult readers, so perfection is not needed). Sight-reading of music is NOT a requirement. Experience in Junior Choir will teach young people how to sight-read, improve their concentration, and assist in their socialization.
During July and August, the CCAS Senior Choir takes a break from its busy, regular season activities, and the Summer Choir takes over the musical leadership of the major Sunday service at the Cathedral, singing the 10:30 a.m. Choral Eucharist each Sunday from July to Labour Day. The only time commitment for this choir is Sunday morning. There is no mid-week practice. All interested singers should come to practice on Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m. to prepare the music for the regular service at 10:30 a.m. The Summer Choir is vocally anchored by a quartet of Choral Scholars and supplemented by other choristers.
